Sanskrit pronunciation · certified

You've been saying it wrong
for nine years.

Nobody corrects a yoga teacher. Not students, not studio owners, not the training that certified you — because most trainings never taught it either.

Press the red button, then the green one. The mangled version is an English-trained voice — the way it actually comes out in a studio. The correct version is an Indian-English voice reading the Devanagari, because a phonetic respelling read by an English voice still comes out with English vowels.

The train wreck, and the fix

Six words you almost certainly mispronounce.

Tap the wrong version first. It's the one you've heard in every studio in the West. Then tap the right one and hear what changes.

Free · one word

Now say one out loud.

Record yourself saying this term, then hear yourself against the correct version, back to back. It takes eleven seconds and it's the most uncomfortable eleven seconds in yoga.

The credential

Fifty terms. Graded. Then you're Sanskrit certified.

$9.95

Not a course you watch. A test you take with your voice, on the fifty terms a teacher actually says in a class.

  • 1
Learn the fifty — each term with the wrong version, the correct version, the meaning, and what your mouth has to do differently.
  • 2
Record all fifty — one at a time, in your own voice, re-record as many times as you like.
  • 3
Get scored per term — a pronunciation accuracy score for each word, not a participation certificate.
  • 4
Pass at 80% and get the badge — with a public verification page at yoga.org that anyone can check.

Nothing is charged today. The graded version isn't open yet — the scoring has to be right before we sell it, and I'd rather say that than take $9.95 now.

Sanskrit Certified Shareable, and verifiable at a yoga.org URL that shows your score and the date. A badge nobody can buy without recording their voice.

What isn't built yet, plainly: the free player and the record-yourself comparison above are real and working. The graded version is not — scoring pronunciation honestly needs a per-phoneme assessment engine, and I've tested that speech-to-text alone can't do it: it transcribes a mangled word to the correct spelling, so it would score everybody as perfect. That gets solved before this takes any money.

Why Yoga.org is doing this

Because pronunciation is the smallest honest example of the whole problem.

A 200-hour certificate says you attended. It doesn't say you can say the name of the pose you're teaching. We're building the certification that measures what you can actually do — and this is the first competency small enough to test in an afternoon.
